The Gap I Couldn't Ignore

People often ask me why I started Straight Talk with Undergraduates Foundation.

The answer is simple. I couldn't ignore what I kept seeing.

During my years as an undergraduate, I met brilliant students who had the passion to succeed but not always the guidance to get there. Many missed scholarships because they heard about them too late. Others graduated without understanding how to prepare for the workplace or where to find mentors. Some simply needed someone who had walked the path before them.

The more I paid attention, the more I realised this wasn't unique to one university. It was a challenge facing undergraduates and recent graduates across Nigeria and many parts of Africa. The problem wasn't a lack of talent. It was a lack of access to mentorship, career guidance and opportunities.

How STUF Began

I didn't set out to build a foundation.

It started with conversations.

I created a simple WhatsApp community for freshers at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) because I wanted students to have the kind of support many of us wished we had when we first arrived on campus. There was no strategic plan, no funding and no expectation that it would become anything beyond a small community of students helping one another.

But those conversations kept growing.

One group became mentorship sessions. Mentorship sessions became fellowship programmes. Fellowship programmes opened doors to leadership development, career conversations, scholarships, internships and opportunities that reached students far beyond one campus.

What began as a simple act of sharing knowledge gradually became Straight Talk with Undergraduates Foundation.

Why We Keep Going

Today, STUF is more than an organisation. It is a community built on the belief that no undergraduate or recent graduate should have to navigate their future alone.

Every fellowship, mentorship session, career workshop and opportunity we share is driven by one purpose: helping young people make informed decisions about their education, careers and lives.

There is still so much work to do. Every day, thousands of students are looking for direction, encouragement and access to opportunities that can change their future. My hope is that STUF continues to grow into a trusted home where they find all three.

If, years from now, more young people can look back and say they discovered a scholarship, secured an internship, found a mentor or gained the confidence to pursue their goals because they encountered STUF, then I will know this journey has been worthwhile.
