Nordic Scholarship Programme in Sweden 2027
A one-month visiting scholarship at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) in Uppsala, Sweden, for students and researchers already based at a university in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland who are pursuing Africa-focused study or research. Note: this is not a scholarship for African students to come and study in Sweden — it's the reverse, for those already affiliated with a Nordic institution. See the Flags sheet in the audit workbook for more on this.
Eligibility
- Master's student, PhD candidate, postdoctoral or mid-career researcher
- Affiliated with a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland (open regardless of citizenship)
- Pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research in the social sciences or humanities
Who is not eligible: anyone not currently affiliated with a university or research centre in one of the four named Nordic countries — African nationality or residence alone does not qualify you for this particular programme.
What you need to apply
- Proof of current affiliation with an eligible Nordic university or research centre
- A description of your Africa-focused research and how a month at NAI's library and research community would support it
Position yourself
If you are a Nordic-based student or researcher of African origin, this is one case where your existing university affiliation — not your nationality — is what actually qualifies you, so lead with that in your application rather than your personal connection to Africa.
What to do if you are not eligible
If you're based in Africa rather than in a Nordic country, NAI's separate African Scholarship Programme is the one aimed at you instead — though note its 2027 round closes earlier in the year, so check its own deadline directly on NAI's site rather than assuming it matches this one.
Benefits
Free accommodation, centrally located in Uppsala
A subsistence allowance of SEK 450 per day
A desk and computer in a shared office at the Institute
Access to NAI's library collections on contemporary Africa
How to apply
Applications close 11 October 2026. Apply directly to the Nordic Africa Institute, confirming your affiliation with an eligible Nordic university or research centre and describing your intended Africa-focused research for the one-month stay.
Application tip
Be specific about which parts of NAI's library and research community you'd actually use — a proposal that names specific resources or potential NAI research hosts reads as more concretely planned than one describing general interest in Africa studies.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a citizen of a Nordic country to apply?
No — citizenship doesn't matter, only your current university or research-centre affiliation in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland.
Is this the same as NAI's African Scholarship Programme?
No — that separate programme is for early-career researchers based in Africa, with its own different deadline.

Official application: apply directly through the Nordic Africa Institute's own page. STUF curates opportunities but does not control external selection, so confirm every detail on the official source before applying.
